(Past Project)
We delivered 10 workshops at the Community Hive in Bolton Marketplace, which explored breast and gynae cancers (cervical, ovarian, womb, vaginal and vulval). In these workshops we explored signs and symptoms, what to do if you find something unusual, accessing healthcare and barriers faced by the women we work with.
The artwork promoted discussion within the group and contributions were made by those who had lived experience of breast and gynae cancers.
Each artwork had been designed so that the meaning is readily understood by members of the wider community.
The aims of these workshops were to educate the women with the signs and symptoms of breast and gynae cancers, encourage them to seek help early and to encourage them to attend cervical smears and mammograms.
The touring workshops consisted of a prepared presentation by Cancer Research UK, followed by a simple craft workshop.
As you can see, each week, participants looked at different aspects of breast and gynae cancers and the information was revisited later on in the workshops to insure understanding. The participants’ knowledge grew throughout the workshops and they became confident to talk to healthcare professionals with any concerns they may have had. They were confident in recognising the signs and symptoms of breast and gynae cancers and knew the importance of seeking help early. The participants were also less fearful of the subject which enabled them to discuss it freely and pass their knowledge on to others.
We held an event and exhibition at MhIST which was well attended . The event raised awareness of the signs and symptoms of Cancer and included care parcels, quizzes, pasties and crafts.
